Optimal Preemptive Online Algorithms for Scheduling with Known Largest Size on Two Uniform Machines

چکیده
In this paper, we consider the semi-online preemptive scheduling problem with known largest job sizes on two uniform machines. Our goal is to maximize the continuous period of time (starting from time zero) when both machines are busy, which is equivalent to maximizing the minimum machine completion time if idle time is not introduced. We design optimal deterministic semi-online algorithms for every machine speed ratio s ∈ [1,∞), and show that idle time is required to achieve the optimality during the assignment procedure of the algorithm for any s > (s + 3s + 1)/(s + 2s + 1). The competitive ratio of the algorithms is (s + 3s + 1)/(s + 2s + 1), which matches the randomized lower bound for every s ≥ 1. Hence randomization does not help for the discussed preemptive scheduling

Online Scheduling of Jobs for D-benevolent instances On Identical Machines
We consider online scheduling of jobs with specic release time on m identical machines. Each job has a weight and a size; the goal is maximizing total weight of completed jobs. At release time of a job it must immediately be scheduled on a machine or it will be rejected. It is also allowed during execution of a job to preempt it; however, it will be lost and only weight of completed jobs contri...
متن کاملNew Results on Flow Time with Resource Augmentation
We study the problem of scheduling n jobs that arrive over time. We consider a non-preemptive setting on a single machine. The goal is to minimize the total flow time. We use extra resource competitive analysis: an optimal off-line algorithm which schedules jobs on a single machine is compared to a more powerful on-line algorithm that has l machines. We design an algorithm of competitive ratio ...
متن کاملOptimizing a bi-objective preemptive multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling problem: NSGA-II and MOICA algorithms
The aim of a multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MRCPSP) is to assign resource(s) with the restricted capacity to an execution mode of activities by considering relationship constraints, to achieve pre-determined objective(s). These goals vary with managers or decision makers of any organization who should determine suitable objective(s) considering organization strategi...
متن کاملOptimal and Online Preemptive Scheduling on Uniformly Related Machines
We consider the problem of preemptive scheduling on uniformly related machines. We present a semi-online algorithm which, if the optimal makespan is given in advance, produces an optimal schedule. Using the standard doubling technique, this yields a 4-competitive deterministic and an e≈ 2.71-competitive randomized online algorithm. In addition, it matches the performance of the previously known...
متن کاملPower of Preemption on Uniform Parallel Machines
For a scheduling problem on parallel machines, the power of preemption is defined as the ratio of the makespan of an optimal non-preemptive schedule over the makespan of an optimal preemptive schedule. For m uniform parallel machines, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the global bound of 2 − 1/m is tight. If the makespan of the optimal preemptive schedule is defined by...
